Avalanche warning for region Vest-Finnmark Tuesday 24.01.2023

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Considerable avalanche danger. Natural released avalanches are expected. It can be possible to remotly trigger avalanches if the persistent weak layer deep in the snow pack is affected. Avoid avalanche terrain.

Avalanche problems

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3). Remote triggering is possible.

Buried weak layer of faceted snow beneath a crust

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 23. January 2023

Mountain weather

Monday 23. January 2023

7 mm precipitation, up to 14 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 400 m a.s.l Monday night. Gale from south, changing to gale from the west during the afternoon. -9 °C to -2 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Tuesday 24. January 2023

10 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 100 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Strong gale from west, changing to moderate gale from the west during the afternoon. -8 °C to -3 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
