Avalanche warning for region Vest-Finnmark Monday 23.01.2023

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

The danger increases with strong winds and snowfall. Avoid areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Natural released avalanches can occur, both in the dry snow, and in the wet snow below the treeline. There is a also a persistent weak layer deep in the snowpack.

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3). Remote triggering is possible.

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Søndag har mildvær sansynligvis fuktet snødekket høyt til fjells. Før dette var snøen over skoggrensen hardbanket og avblåst, med enkelte partier mykere fokksnøflak. I skogen og skjermede formasjoner er det mykere og løsere snøoverflate. På ytre strøk er det lite snø.

Svakt lag av kantkorn dannet i november ligger nå under hard fokksnø mange steder, men er fortsatt aktive.

Det kan finnes lommer med nedføyket rim høyere i snødekket.

Fredag ble det meldt om små våte løssnøskred ved Alteidet.

Lørdag ble det observert lett snøfokk, og skytende sprekker på kantkornlaget ved ca 550moh ved Alteidet.

6-10 mm precipitation. Rain up to 1100 m a.s.l during renoon. Moderate gale from south. -5 °C to 2 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Monday 23. January 2023

7 mm precipitation, up to 14 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 400 m a.s.l Monday night. Gale from south, changing to gale from the west during the afternoon. -9 °C to -2 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Mandag vil kraftig vind i kombinasjon med endel nedbør øke skredfaren. Fokksnøflak vil dannes over mildværsgrensa, og der pålagringen er størst kan disse løse naturlig. Det er usikkert hvor mye vedvarende svake lag i snødekket tåler av ekstra belastning. Dersom det løsner nær bakken kan enkelte skred bli store.

I lavlandet vil det fortsatt være mildt, og enkelte små naturlig utløse våte skred kan forekomme. Skredfaren er betydelig lavere på ytre strøk der det er lite snø.
