Avalanche warning for region Tromsø Friday 12.04.2024

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
There is a persistent weak layer at high elevations. Calm weather on friday will cause the snowpack to stabilise. But until this has happened the weak layer might still be active.

Avalanche problems

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2). Remote triggering is possible.

Buried weak layer of faceted snow near surface

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 11. April 2024

Over 400 moh er snøen fortsatt lagdelt.

Mountain weather

Thursday 11. April 2024

8 mm precipitation, up to 18 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 500 m a.s.l Thursday night. Strong breeze from west, changing to breeze from the west during the afternoon. -2 °C to 3 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Friday 12. April 2024

1-3 mm precipitation. Rain up to 300 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Breeze from south. -3 °C to 2 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
