Avalanche warning for region Salten Friday 29.03.2024

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Increasing wind may form unstable wind slabs. Terrain near ridgelines and cols are the most prone.
The sun will heat steep slopes, and small wet loose avalanches are possible.
Be aware of slipping on an old, hard crust layer.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2). Remote triggering is possible.

Buried weak layer of faceted snow near surface

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 28. March 2024

Mountain weather

Thursday 28. March 2024

No precipitation. Breeze from northeast, changing to strong breeze from the northeast during the afternoon. -14 °C to -4 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Friday 29. March 2024

Little to no precipitation. Moderate gale from southeast. -10 °C to -3 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
