Avalanche warning for region Hallingdal Sunday 08.01.2023

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Demanding avalanche conditions due to a persistent weak layer of facets beneath wind deposited snow. Use great caution on your approach to avalanche terrain.

Avalanche problems

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3). Remote triggering is possible.

Buried weak layer of faceted snow near the ground

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Saturday 7. January 2023

Mountain weather

Saturday 7. January 2023

6-10 mm precipitation. Rain up to 700 m a.s.l during the evening. Breeze from southeast. -11 °C to -2 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Sunday 8. January 2023

8 mm precipitation, up to 14 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 800 m a.s.l. Breeze from southeast. -5 °C to -1 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
