Avalanche warning for region Sør-Troms Friday 03.01.2020

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
After days with heavy rain and large accumulations of new snow in the alpine, things will gradually settle. But the large wind slabs could still be triggered. Below treeline the snow has poor bonds and wet loose avalanches could easily be triggered.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 2. January 2020

Mountain weather

Thursday 2. January 2020

25 mm precipitation, up to 40 mm in the most exposed areas. Fresh breeze from south, changing to moderate gale from the southwest during the afternoon. -2 °C to 4 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Friday 3. January 2020

8 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from southwest, changing to strong breeze from the north during the evening. -6 °C to 0 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
