Avalanche warning for region Romsdal Tuesday 31.12.2019

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger there.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 30. December 2019

Mountain weather

Monday 30. December 2019

20 mm precipitation, up to 40 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from west, changing to strong breeze from the northwest during the evening. -5 °C to 1 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Tuesday 31. December 2019

18 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from west. -8 °C to -2 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Pågåande sterk vind frå vest og mykje ny nedbør gjev stor snøtransport inn i austlege leområder og ferske fokksnøflak. Det ligg òg eldre fokksnøflak her som får auka pålagring. Skred i desse kan verte store.

Stadvis ligg det svakt lag kantkorn under skarelag i høgda.
