Avalanche warning for region Nord-Troms Thursday 02.01.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

High temperature and rain elevate the danger of wet avalanches. In the alpine the avalancheproblem is dry windslabs. A persistent weak layer can still be present underneath wind deposited snow in isolated features.

Avalanche problems

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Water pooling in/above snow layers

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of faceted snow above a crust

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Mildvær og regn gir smelteomvandlet snødekke opp til mildværsgrensen. Over denne høyden er det varierende snøoverflate etter perioder med kraftig vind.

Det er observert løse lag med kantkorn over, under og mellom skarelag, dette ligger for det meste i de øverste 50cm av snødekket. Siste observasjoner tyder på at det kreves stor tilleggsbelastning for å påvirke disse.

Det kan også finnes kantkornlag i nedre del av snødekket, men dette er vanskelig å påvirke på grunn av den harde overliggende snøen.

Observasjon fra Kåfjord mandag viser ingen kantkorndannelse rundt skarelag under mildværsgrensen. Eldre kantkornlag eksisterer fortsatt over mildværsgrensa.

6-10 mm precipitation. Breeze from west, changing to strong breeze from the southeast during the afternoon. -13 °C to -6 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Thursday 2. January 2020

12 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Fresh breeze from south, changing to moderate gale from the southwest during the evening. -7 °C to 0 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Temperaturen stiger og etterhvert som nedbøren går over til regn vil faren for våte skred øke. Fokksnøproblemet begrenses samtidig til høgfjellet. Her er det til gjengjeld ventet store fokksnøansamlinger.

Mildværet når enda høyere enn sist og det er uvisst om regnet vil nå ned til de svake lagene.
