Avalanche warning for region Hardanger Tuesday 31.12.2019

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger there.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Water pooling in/above snow layers

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 30. December 2019

Det har vore mykje nedbør siste døgnet, enkelte stadar over 100 mm (~1m snø). Over 900 moh har sterk vind frå sørvest gitt stor transport av snø inn i nordaustlege leheng i høgda.

Det er dog generelt lite snø under 700 moh i regionen, spesielt i vestlege delar.

Det har vore observert kantkorn ved bakken.

Mountain weather

Monday 30. December 2019

50 mm precipitation, up to 85 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from west. -6 °C to 2 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Tuesday 31. December 2019

2 mm precipitation, up to 8 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from northwest. -8 °C to -3 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Pågåande sterk vind frå vest og ny nedbør vil gje snøtransport til austlege leheng. Her vil ein få auka pålagring og ferske fokksnøflak. Det ligg òg eldre større flak som vil trenge tid på å stabilisere seg.

Det er mykje vatn i snøen som treng tid på å drenere seg so ein kan framleis vente seg nokre våte skredtypar i låglandet.
