Avalanche warning for region Sunnmøre Monday 16.03.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
The avalanche danger are decreasing after the storm sunday, but avoid lee areas with wind deposited snow from Sunday, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger there.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Sunday 15. March 2020

Pågående vær gir mye fersk snø i høyden.

Mountain weather

Sunday 15. March 2020

8 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from south, changing to breeze from the west during the afternoon. -8 °C to -1 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Monday 16. March 2020

Little to no precipitation. Breeze from southeast, changing to moderate gale from the south during the evening. -10 °C to -3 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
