Avalanche warning for region Sunnmøre Tuesday 31.12.2019

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in areas with fresh windloaded snow. Avoid lee areas where a persistent weak layer can be hidden in the snow pack. Avalanches are triggered most easily where the snow pack is thin, typically close to ridges and on convex formations.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 30. December 2019

Det har kome mykje nedbør siste døgn i kraftig vind frå vest-nordvest. Dette har gitt stor snøtransport inn i austlege leheng over 900 moh.

Mountain weather

Monday 30. December 2019

20 mm precipitation, up to 40 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from west, changing to strong breeze from the northwest during the evening. -6 °C to 2 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Tuesday 31. December 2019

16-20 mm precipitation. Strong breeze from southwest. -8 °C to -2 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Pågåande sterk vind med dreiing til sørvest og mykje ny nedbør gjev stor snøtransport til nordaustlege leheng. Her får ein auka pålagring og ferske fokksnøflak. Det ligg òg eldre fokksnøflak mot søraust som treng tid på å stabilisere seg.
