Avalanche warning for region Ofoten Thursday 12.01.2023

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
There could be some small unstable storm slabs in places with new snow. A persistent weak layer of facets is lurking at ground level. It´s generally hard to trigger, but use caution where the snowpack sits on smooth rock slabs

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Wednesday 11. January 2023

Mountain weather

Wednesday 11. January 2023

1-3 mm precipitation. Precipitation as snow. Strong breeze from southeast. -14 °C to -5 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Thursday 12. January 2023

2-4 mm precipitation. Rain up to 300 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Fresh breeze from southeast, changing to fresh breeze from the southwest during the evening. -7 °C to -2 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Det ventes litt nysnø og vind som kan danne ustabile fokksnøflak over mildværsgrensen.

Det finnes svake lag av kantkorn i snødekket. De ligger godt beskytte av hard fokksnø og er generelt vanskelig å påvirke.
