Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in areas with fresh wind deposited snow. Old persistent weak layers exist in the snow cover, but is hard to trigger.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Water pooling in/above snow layers

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of faceted snow above a crust

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 2. January 2020

Torsdag er det forbigåande mildvær opp til ca. 900 moh, samt nedbør og sterk vind. Ettersom det blir kaldare vil snødekket fryse under mildværsgrensa. Over mildværsgrensa vil snøoverflata sannsynlegvis vere vindpåverka, og fokksnø vil finnast stadig lavare ettersom mildværsgrensa synk.

Det er observert lag med kantkorn over, under og mellom skarelag over 600 moh. Det finnast oftast i dei øvste 50 cm av snødekket. Dei siste observasjonane tyder på at det krevjar stor tilleggslast for å påverke desse.

Mountain weather

Thursday 2. January 2020

12 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Fresh breeze from south, changing to moderate gale from the southwest during the evening. -7 °C to 0 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Friday 3. January 2020

2 mm precipitation, up to 8 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from southwest, changing to strong breeze from the west during the evening. -11 °C to -1 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
