Avalanche warning for region Hardanger Friday 31.12.2021

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Wind and fresh snow may give instable conditions in some slopes. Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger. Avoid convex terrain.

Avalanche problems

New snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 30. December 2021

Det er lite snø i regionen og spesielt vest i området er det lite skiføre under 1000 moh. Rundt Røldal er det flekkvis skare/smelteomvandlet snø.

Mountain weather

Thursday 30. December 2021

25 mm precipitation, up to 45 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 1300 m a.s.l during the evening. Strong breeze from southwest. -6 °C to 0 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Friday 31. December 2021

10 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 1200 m a.s.l Friday night. Strong breeze from southwest, changing to strong breeze from the northwest during the afternoon. -5 °C to 2 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
