Avalanche warning for region Hardanger Thursday 09.01.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Avoid lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger here.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 9. January 2020

Lite snø under 4-500 moh.

Mountain weather

Wednesday 8. January 2020

50 mm precipitation, up to 70 mm in the most exposed areas. Gale from west. -6 °C to 1 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Thursday 9. January 2020

8 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from west, changing to breeze from the southeast during renoon. -9 °C to -4 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

NB; oppdatert kl 0900 torsdag. Kraftig vind først på dagen med litt nedbør vil fornye skredproblemet med fersk fokksnø i mange bratte heng. Det er truleg at eldre fokksnø har stabilisert seg ein god del etter gunstige temperaturar siste døgnet.
