Avalanche forecast for Vest-Telemark Tuesday 2019-02-12

3
Considerable
Published:

Be careful in areas with fresh windloaded snow. Avoid lee areas where a persistent weak layer can be hidden in the snow pack. Avalanches are triggered most easily where the snow pack is thin, typically close to ridges and on convex formations.

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Buried weak layer of new snow

Avoid steep (more than 30 degrees) areas with fresh wind deposited snow, especially convex terrain. An avalanche is easier to trigger where wind slabs are thin or soft. Look for areas where the wind recently has deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Remember that local wind effects will cause variation in where the wind slabs occur.
2 - Medium
Low additional load
Widespread steep slopes
Possible

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

Buried weak layer of faceted snow beneath a crust

Avoid skiing in avalanche terrain (steep terrain more than 30 degrees and in runout zones). NB, remote triggering is likely. Make very conservative route choices, especially in unknown terrain, after snowfall and if temperatures rise. Identifying areas where the weak layer is present might be difficult and requires experience. Danger signs are whoumpf-sounds, cracking and recent avalanches. However, absence of signs does not mean it is safe.
3 - Large
High additional load
Isolated steep slopes
Possible

Notes

Vær forsiktig i østvendte bratte heng.

Snow Cover

90 cm in total Some snow drift 15 cm new snow Much loose snow (10-30cm) Dry Mye løs snø tilgjengelig for transport. Hardere flak i høyden.
