Avalanche warning for region Sunnmøre Saturday 11.01.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Heavy snow- and rainfall gives generally unstable conditions. Avoid areas under steep terrain. High up is the problem storm slabs, in lower terrain is the problem wet slabs.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Water pooling in/above snow layers

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Friday 10. January 2020

Snøen ligg ujamnt fordelt i austvendt terreng.

Mountain weather

Friday 10. January 2020

No precipitation. Breeze from southwest, changing to strong breeze from the southwest during the evening. -11 °C to -3 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Saturday 11. January 2020

25 mm precipitation, up to 40 mm in the most exposed areas. Gale from southwest. -6 °C to 1 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
