Avalanche forecast for Nord-Troms Tuesday 2019-03-12

2
Moderate
Published:

Be careful in areas with wind slabs. Layers of faceted crystals have started to form in the snow cover, but have not been a problem yet. This may quickly change in the cold weather, so be extra cautious, especially around the treeline, and where the snow cover is thin and soft.

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Be careful and keep distance to each other in steep (above 30 degrees) terrain with fresh wind deposited snow, especially convex terrain. An avalanche is easier to trigger where wind slabs are thin or soft. Look for areas where the wind recently has deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Remember that local wind effects will cause variation in where the wind slabs occur.

Avalanche Problems

Dry slab avalanche Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow Within half a meter The weak layer collapses easily and clean (easy propagation). The collapsing weak layer is thin < 3 cm. Difficult to trigger 2 - Medium E, SE, S above 400 masl

Avalanche Danger Assessment
