Avalanche warning for region Hardanger Saturday 15.02.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Strong winds and a rapid temperature increase at night will increase the avalanche danger, especially when the wind speed is at its highest. The most prominent avalanche problems are wind slabs at higher altitudes and wet snow at lower altitudes.

Avalanche problems

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Water pooling in/above snow layers

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can very easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Friday 14. February 2020

Mountain weather

Friday 14. February 2020

10 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Breeze from east, changing to moderate gale from the south during the evening. -11 °C to -6 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Saturday 15. February 2020

10 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Fresh breeze from southwest, changing to gale from the south during the evening. -8 °C to -2 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
