Avalanche warning for region Hardanger Tuesday 14.01.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Wind and fresh snow may give instable conditions. Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger there. Especially avoid convex terrain.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 13. January 2020

Mountain weather

Monday 13. January 2020

3-6 mm precipitation. Strong breeze from southwest, changing to gale from the south during the evening. -8 °C to -4 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Tuesday 14. January 2020

25 mm precipitation, up to 40 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong gale from south, changing to strong breeze from the southwest during renoon. -7 °C to -2 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
