Avalanche warning for region Jotunheimen Friday 21.01.2022

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Wet avalanches can release naturally due to temperature rise. Unstable conditions due to wind slabs around the treeline and lee areas in the alpine. Persistent weak layers may also be triggered where the snow cover is thin.

Avalanche problems

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Water pooling in/above snow layers

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a large truck or destroy several houses (size 4).

Buried weak layer of faceted snow above a crust

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 20. January 2022

2 skred i østvendt terreng.

Mountain weather

Thursday 20. January 2022

5 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Gale from northwest, changing to moderate gale from the northwest during the afternoon. -16 °C to -11 °C at 1800 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Friday 21. January 2022

1 mm precipitation, up to 6 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 1000 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Moderate gale from northwest, changing to fresh breeze from the west during the afternoon. -12 °C to -4 °C at 1800 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
