Avalanche warning for region Sør-Troms Tuesday 09.01.2018

Danger level 4 - High avalanche danger

Published:
Rising temperatures and rain will weaken the snow pack. Naturally released avalanches are expected, mostly at lower elevations and in the outer parts of the region. In the alpine the wind slabs will remain unstable.

Avalanche problems

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

You can very easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of surface hoar

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 8. January 2018

Mountain weather

Monday 8. January 2018

8 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Gale from northwest, changing to fresh breeze from the northwest during the afternoon. -8 °C to -3 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Tuesday 9. January 2018

15 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Fresh breeze from west. -4 °C to 1 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Mildvær og regn svekker bindingene i snødekket i lavlandet. Her ventes det naturlig utløste skred.
