Avalanche warning for region Romsdal Friday 28.01.2022

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Avoid lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger there. Turning wind direction will cause avalanche problems in new directions during day.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 27. January 2022

Mountain weather

Thursday 27. January 2022

25 mm precipitation, up to 40 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 700 m a.s.l Thursday night. Breeze from southwest, changing to strong breeze from the northwest during the afternoon. -9 °C to -1 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Friday 28. January 2022

10 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 600 m a.s.l during the evening. Fresh breeze from northwest, changing to moderate gale from the south during the afternoon. -10 °C to -4 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
