Avalanche warning for region Nord-Troms Tuesday 17.05.2022

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in areas with fresh wind deposited snow. Wet avalanches can occur where the snow is wet. Be careful beneath and in the vicinity of cornices.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 16. May 2022

Mildvær og regn forrige uke har gjort snøoverflaten våt og fuktig oppover i fjellet. Nattefrost har dannet bærende skarelag i høyden. Nasjonaldagen vil gi nysnø langt ned i fjellsidene.

På lørdag ble det observert flere små løssnøskred i regionen. Det ble også løst ut noen små løssnøskred av skikjører i øst-vendte heng.

Mountain weather

Monday 16. May 2022

12 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 600 m a.s.l Monday night. Strong breeze from northwest, changing to fresh breeze from the northwest during the evening. -7 °C to -2 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Tuesday 17. May 2022

6 mm precipitation, up to 11 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 400 m a.s.l during the evening. Breeze from west, changing to strong breeze from the west during the afternoon. -8 °C to -3 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
