Avalanche warning for region Voss Monday 17.01.2022

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Avoid lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger there.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Sunday 16. January 2022

I fjellet har det de siste dagene lagt seg opp ferske fokksnøflak i leheng mot øst. Det gamle snødekket som ble vått onsdag og torsdag har fryst til i overflaten.

Observasjoner fredag viser at det er mye vann i snødekket.

Mountain weather

Sunday 16. January 2022

20 mm precipitation, up to 30 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 700 m a.s.l Sunday night. Moderate gale from west, changing to strong gale from the northwest during the evening. -7 °C to -1 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Monday 17. January 2022

2-4 mm precipitation. Rain up to 500 m a.s.l during the evening. Moderate gale from northwest, changing to fresh breeze from the west during renoon. -8 °C to -1 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
