Avalanche warning for region Ofoten Tuesday 25.01.2022

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
New wind deposited snow will create new unstable wind slabs. Wind slab avalanches may trigger larger avalanches on persistent weak layers deep in the snowpack.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a large truck or destroy several houses (size 4).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 24. January 2022

Mountain weather

Monday 24. January 2022

20 mm precipitation, up to 35 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 600 m a.s.l Monday night. Strong gale from southwest, changing to strong breeze from the southwest during renoon. -11 °C to -2 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Tuesday 25. January 2022

6 mm precipitation, up to 16 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Strong breeze from west, changing to breeze from the west during the afternoon. -10 °C to -6 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
