Avalanche warning for region Hardanger Sunday 16.01.2022

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Wind deposited snow is the problem above the new snow line, lower down some naturally released wet avalanches can occur due to rain and rise in temperature.

Avalanche problems

New snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Saturday 15. January 2022

Mildvær og regn onsdag og torsdag ga en snøoverflate av smelteomvandlet snø, trolig opp til omkring 1300 moh.

Observasjoner fredag viser lite snø i regionen etter Gyda.

Mountain weather

Saturday 15. January 2022

2-6 mm precipitation. Rain up to 800 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Breeze from south, changing to fresh breeze from the southwest during the evening. -10 °C to -3 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Sunday 16. January 2022

20 mm precipitation, up to 35 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 700 m a.s.l Sunday night. Moderate gale from west, changing to strong gale from the northwest during the evening. -9 °C to -3 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Skredfaren øker søndag. Skred kan løsne av seg selv. Nysnø og kraftig vind fører til flakdannelse i østvendte leheng over tregrensa.

Under mildværsgrensa kan det gå enkelte våte skred. Temperaturen er synkende gjennom dagen, så problemet med våte snøskred vil avta.
