Avalanche warning for region Vest-Telemark Wednesday 22.01.2020

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow high in the mountains, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger here.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Tuesday 21. January 2020

Over mildværsgrensa ligger det ferske fokksnøflak i Ø fjellsider.

Mountain weather

Tuesday 21. January 2020

3 mm precipitation, up to 9 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from west, changing to moderate gale from the northwest during renoon. -4 °C to 1 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Wednesday 22. January 2020

No precipitation. Moderate gale from northwest, changing to breeze from the west during renoon. -6 °C to -2 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
