Avalanche warning for region Trollheimen Thursday 09.01.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Avoid lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger here.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 9. January 2020

Det er varierande snødekke. Kraftig vind og høg varme har smelta bort mykje av nysnøen som kom sist helg. Det er lite snø att i låglandet i ytre delar av regionen, og på ryggar og ope vestvendt terreng. Snøen ligg ujamnt fordelt i austvendt terreng.

Tidlegare observerte svake lag av kantkorn er dekt av bærande lag også på dei høgaste toppane, så dei er lite aktuelle som skredproblem.

Onsdag er det nysnø i byger og kraftig snøfokk på toppane

Mountain weather

Wednesday 8. January 2020

15 mm precipitation, up to 30 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to strong gale from the west during the afternoon. -7 °C to 0 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Thursday 9. January 2020

3-6 mm precipitation. Gale from west, changing to breeze from the southwest during the afternoon. -9 °C to -4 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

NB; oppdatert kl 0800 torsdag. Kraftig vind med litt nedbør vil gi skredproblem med fersk fokksnø i leområder. Det er truleg at eldre fokksnø har stabilisert seg ein del etter gunstige temperaturar siste døgnet.
