Avalanche warning for region Sør-Troms Thursday 05.12.2019

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
As the intensity of the rain decreases and the temperatures drop the concern now focused on recently loaded slopes in the alpine. At lower elevation the snow pack is very wet.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Wednesday 4. December 2019

Mountain weather

Wednesday 4. December 2019

25 mm precipitation, up to 45 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from southwest, changing to moderate gale from the southwest during the afternoon. 0 °C to 4 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Thursday 5. December 2019

6-10 mm precipitation. Strong breeze from southwest, changing to fresh breeze from the southwest during the afternoon. -4 °C to 1 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
