Avalanche warning for region Svartisen Friday 17.01.2020

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Use caution on recently loaded slopes in the alpine. The forecast is somewhat uncertain and relates to how much precipitation will fall on Thursday. Thursday's wind slabs will most likely form strong bonds quickly and the avalanche danger is decreasing throughout the day.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 16. January 2020

Mountain weather

Thursday 16. January 2020

20 mm precipitation, up to 35 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from southeast, changing to gale from the southwest during the afternoon. -7 °C to -1 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Friday 17. January 2020

4 mm precipitation, up to 10 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from southwest, changing to fresh breeze from the southeast during the afternoon. -5 °C to -1 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
