Avalanche warning for region Svartisen Thursday 16.01.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
The danger increases when the wind picks up. Avoid areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. It is possible with some naturally released avalanches.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Wednesday 15. January 2020

Mountain weather

Wednesday 15. January 2020

1-4 mm precipitation. Strong breeze from southwest, changing to breeze from the south during renoon. -8 °C to -3 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Thursday 16. January 2020

20 mm precipitation, up to 35 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from southeast, changing to gale from the southwest during the afternoon. -7 °C to -1 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Nytt lavtrykk medfører økende vind og nedbør. Det vil legges opp ferske fokksnøflak i leområder over mildværgrensen. Mest utsatt er midtre og sørlige deler av regionen der det kommer mest nedbør. Det kan gå enkelte naturlig utløste tørre og våte skred.
