Avalanche warning for region Sunnmøre Sunday 04.04.2021

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Strong winds and more precipitation are expected. Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. A slab avalanche is possible to release where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft. Weak layers of faceted snow exists at high altitudes.

I helga har det under vekslande temperaturar kome 15-25 cm nysnø over eit snødekke som tidlegare vart fukta høgt til fjells. Det ligg frå før mest snø i leheng som vender mot nord og aust. Det er lite snø for årstida, og under tregrensa er det tynt med snø.

Kantkornlag djupt i snøen danna under kulde i januar og februar, kan framleis vere eit problem nokre stadar høgt til fjells over 1300 - 1400 moh.

Kantkorn kan òg ha utvikla seg nær snøoverflata som følgje av store temperatursvingingar gjennom døgnet.

Fredag vart det rapportert om eit middels stort snøskred utøyst av skiløpar i Kvanndalen nord for Kolåstinden. Skredet gjekk på fokksnøflak.

Laurdag morgon var det på Roaldshornet (1050 moh) i Stranda -6 °C og bris frå vest.

1-3 mm precipitation. Breeze from northwest, changing to fresh breeze from the southwest during the afternoon. -9 °C to 1 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Sunday 4. April 2021

25 mm precipitation, up to 35 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to moderate gale from the northwest during the afternoon. -12 °C to 0 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Store nysnømengder og stiv kuling frå sørvest og seinare nordvest vil danne nye fokksnøflak i leformasjonar. Det vil truleg vere lett å løyse ut middels store skred i mange leheng med fersk innblåst snø, særleg der ferske flak er tynne og mjuke. Nokre store skred kan gå naturleg, men lange utløp ned til låglandet vil vere avgrensa pga. lite snø frå før i kjente skredløp. Problemet er dermed størst i fjellterreng.

Høgt til fjells kan det i enkelte heng framleis finnast svakt lag av kantkorn i snøpakka. Skred som lausnar på slike lag kan bli store.
