Avalanche forecast for Salten Sunday 2019-02-03

2
Moderate
Published:

Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger here.

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Be careful and keep distance to each other in steep (above 30 degrees) terrain with fresh wind deposited snow, especially convex terrain. An avalanche is easier to trigger where wind slabs are thin or soft. Look for areas where the wind recently has deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Remember that local wind effects will cause variation in where the wind slabs occur.

Avalanche Problems

Dry slab avalanche Buried weak layer of new snow Within half a meter The weak layer collapses easily and clean (easy propagation). The collapsing weak layer is thin < 3 cm. The overlying slab is soft. Easy to trigger Possible 2 - Medium Specific steep slopes N, NE, W, NW above 400 masl

Danger Sign

Recent cracks Skytende sprekker i lite NV heng. Propagerer og glir ut på nedføyket nysnø. Q1.

Avalanche Danger Assessment

2 Moderate Nedføyket nysnø i NV leheng. Lett å løse ut. Tynne lag hvor vi var. Dette vil avhenge av henteområde og hvor mye snø som var tilgjengelig for SØ-vind. Skredstørrelse 2. Noen heng. Gradvis stabilisering men det tar nok tid i kulden. Forecast correct

Snow Cover

No snowdrift I skogen: ca 20-30 løst. Kantkorndannelse i overflaten. Skoggrense: noe snø 0-10 cm tilgjengelig for transport. Over skoggrensen: På eksponerte rygger er det avblost, vindskare og mildværsskare. Ellers er snødekket relativt jevnt fordelt med litt løs eller myk snø på toppen.
