Avalanche forecast for Nordenskiöld Land Monday 2021-02-15

Highest danger level per day:
2
Moderate
Published:

Locally unstable conditions. A skier or a snow mobile may trigger avalanches in the fresh wind slabs. Wind slabs might be present in all aspects. Persistent weak layers deeper in the snow in general is hard to trigger, but pay attention where the snowcover is thinner and/or when driving a snowmobile.

Illustrasjon av ferdselsråd Avoid terrain steeper than 30 degrees and runout zones where the avalanche problem is present. Remote triggering is possible.
Illustrasjon av ferdselsråd NB: Identifying the avalanche problem is very difficult.

Avalanche Problems

Dry slab avalanche Buried weak layer of faceted snow beneath a crust Within half a meter The weak layer collapses easily and clean (easy propagation). The collapsing weak layer is thin < 3 cm. The overlying slab is soft. Easy to trigger 2 - Medium N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW After getting several widespread collapses, i dug a quick pit to see what the noise was about. Seems as though the latest snow from the weekend possibly in combination with warmer temperatures (the overlying wind slab now feels softer and rubbery) has in some locations reactivated the facets under the 15 january (?) crust. Not sure to what extent this avalanche problem has become this potent regionally, but i was in this area yesterday with no collapses. This snowpack structure is at least fairly widespread in the area around Longyearbyen, but since i've only observed the problem being this potent and reactive here, i put utbredelse as få bratte heng.

Avalanche Danger Assessment

Ser ut som kantkorn problemet / vedvarende svakt lag ble mer potent i de siste 24 timer. Flere drønn i snøen observert rundt Longyearbyen i dag.

Notes

On the marked location in the flat between Larsbreen isgrotte and Trollsteinen ridge, I triggered a massive collapse in the weak layer by skiing. I could hear the sound of it propagating for 3-4 seconds after it started, and felt the top slab sagging under me. Be careful with remote triggering these days

Avalanche Danger Assessment

Danger Sign

Whumpf sound Område: På dette stedet. Beskrivelse: Also included was a quite solid whomp sound in that isolated part of the slope. Turned out that i affected some kind of depth hoar around 1,10m deep. Couldn't tell if cup shaped or not since it was a bit windy and some snowdrift. Weak layer was only affected in an area around 10m x 15m with very soft fresh snow. further down where i dug a snowpit the layer was too deep and well protected. Not sure why nothing released, maybe compressive suppport due to a slight concave slope shape or rocks underneath the snow that held the better part of the snow pack in place?

Recent cracks Område: På dette stedet. Beskrivelse: Shooting crack around 10m long on a small isolated part of the slope (gully down from gruvefjellet)

Notes

In the gullies in Longyeardalen there might be some spots/ pockets where weak layers deeper in the snowpack can be affected. I have not been able to affect any deeper weak layer anywhere else in the Nordenskiöld land.

After stronger hits a fracture propagated through a weak layer which looked like crusted snow (1mm small snow crystals see picture). Weak layer did not slide automatically but was very even.

Avalanche Danger Assessment

Notes

Snow profile dug on the way to Larsbreen. Avalanche risk 3 has been evaluated. A block test discovered a weak layer at around 15cm depth which did not fracture after weak hits but after medium strong hits. Problem appears to be a covered snow crust.
