Be careful in leeward slopes, where wind deposited snow is covering persistent week layers. Beware of alarm signals like shooting cracks and collapsing snow.

Illustrasjon av ferdselsråd Keep distance to each other when traveling in avelanche terrain. NB, remote triggering is possible. Make very conservative route choices, especially in unknown terrain, after snowfall and if temperatures rise. Identifying areas where the weak layer is present might be difficult and requires experience. Danger signs are whoumpf-sounds and cracking which means that you influence weak layers and should avoid avalanche terrain. However, absence of signs does not mean it is safe.

Weather

No precipitation -1 °C 3 m/s from E ← Kommet 5 cm nysnø inne ved Ottofjellet i løpet av helga. Sol fra blå himmel i dag

Avalanche Danger Assessment

Snow Cover

110 cm in total No snowdrift 5 cm new snow Some loose snow (1-10cm) Dry Rundt 5 cm nysnø inne i Helvetiadalen- Tellbreen -Ottofjellet, ligger på hard fokksnø. Sola begynner å ta i siden.

Danger Sign

No signs observed

Tests

Avalanche Activity

27. May. During the day No avalanche activity

Avalanche Problems

Dry slab avalanche Buried weak layer of faceted snow above a crust The collapsing weak layer is thin < 3 cm. A big and identifiable crystal in the weak layer. Difficult to trigger 2 - Medium N, S, SW, W, NW above 500 masl Flere kantkorn lag høyt i snødekket med fokksnø imellom.

Snow Cover

Some snow drift Wind slab (hard slab) Dry See attached map picture for comments. 1. Followed NE ridge up Lars Hjertafjella after new snow fall on 26.may and wind charging from NE to SE. We were first tracks after snowfall. Going up ridge was fine without iceaxe. 2. Walked down from varda to test the windloaded east facing slope. Location shown on map picture and obseveation shown in snow picture. From around 750m there is a one finger hard wind crust 5 to 10 cm on a thin faceted layer that releases when creating a snowpit for stability test. Very easy to activate with smooth surface on either side of slide plane q1. 3. We skied down the old avalanche from last week as shown in map. 3cm breakable crust 4. Loose dry powder found. Turned around before reaching the wind crust layer so not to propagate a slide above us and used this slope with a subtle different aspect that had no wind crust. If follow, cross onto ridge. 5. Heavily sustruggi traverse into loose snow. Dust on crust. Snow pack only had 40cm here. Nice skiing where line is straight on map.
