Avalanche forecast for Lofoten og Vesterålen Sunday 2019-02-10

2
Moderate
Published:

Be aware of isolated wind slabs above treeline, otherwise stable conditions.

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Be careful and keep distance to each other in steep (above 30 degrees) terrain with fresh wind deposited snow, especially convex terrain. An avalanche is easier to trigger where wind slabs are thin or soft. Look for areas where the wind recently has deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Remember that local wind effects will cause variation in where the wind slabs occur.

Avalanche Danger Assessment

Forecast correct

Avalanche Problems

Dry slab avalanche Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow Within half a meter The weak layer collapses easily and clean (easy propagation). Easy to trigger N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW between 500 masl and 200 masl

Snow Cover

80 cm in total No snowdrift 10 cm new snow Elevation of new snow 0 masl. Snow line at 0 masl. Layered snow begins at 500 masl Wind slab (hard slab) Dry Fra nysnø til vindpakket hard/sastrugi/noen glaserte parti.

Tests

ECTX Good Stabilitetstesten ble utført ca 650 moh. Men i skogen (200-300 mot) flaket fokksnøen seg.

Weather

Danger Sign

Område: I dalen/fjorden. Beskrivelse: Mellom 200-300 moh var det tydelig lagdeling i snøen. Flak løsnet der jeg gikk både på opp- og nedtur.
