Avalanche warning for region Jotunheimen Monday 06.01.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in areas with fresh windloaded snow. Avoid lee areas where a persistent weak layer can be hidden in the snow pack. Avalanches are triggered most easily where the snow pack is thin, typically close to ridges and on convex formations.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3). Remote triggering is possible.

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Sunday 5. January 2020

Mountain weather

10 mm precipitation, up to 35 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from southwest, changing to gale from the west during the afternoon. -11 °C to -2 °C at 1800 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Monday 6. January 2020

4 mm precipitation, up to 10 mm in the most exposed areas. Fresh breeze from southwest, changing to moderate gale from the southwest during renoon. -5 °C to 1 °C at 1800 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
