Avalanche Activity
• 25. Jan. During the day (+01:00) • Wet slab avalanche • One (1). 1 - Small. Spontaneous release • Some steep slopes. S. Between 900 masl and unknown masl • This location seems to consistently avalanche most seasons but this seems to be the first this winter at this location. Caused by the rapid warming of the snow pack, rain precipitation and water running down the bedrock. Full depth release. No run out but a substantial debris pile of wet snow with some blue ice. Glide cracks had been showing in previous days. Large crown wall. Size of slab is around 25m x 15m. Perhaps not a 'small' avalanche but not quite a 'medium' avalanche.
Weather leading up to event has been winds from NNE over previous days transporting snow and fluctuations of freezing level from snow to rain with a rapid warming and change to SW winds in the early hours of 25/1/20. Another large slab on the same face but towards the east is developing large glide cracks.
