Avalanche warning for region Hardanger Friday 21.01.2022

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Use caution in lee areas with wind deposited snow, especially in the alpine. Naturally released wet avalanches possible due to rising temperature.

Avalanche problems

New snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 20. January 2022

Mountain weather

Thursday 20. January 2022

2-4 mm precipitation. Precipitation as snow. Moderate gale from northwest, changing to strong breeze from the northwest during the evening. -13 °C to -9 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Friday 21. January 2022

6-10 mm precipitation. Rain up to 1000 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Fresh breeze from northwest. -11 °C to -2 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Over mildværsgrensa vil fokksnø stabilisere seg gradvis, men i enkelte heng er det fortsatt lett å løse ut skred. I utsatte heng høyt til fjells kan skred bli store.
Stigende temperatur utover dagen gir fare for våte løssnøskred under mildværsgrensen. I områdene som har fått mest nysnø de siste dagene kan skred som løsner bli middels store.
