Avalanche warning for region Hardanger Tuesday 15.01.2019

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger there.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 14. January 2019

Mountain weather

Monday 14. January 2019

10 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Gale from northwest, changing to moderate gale from the northwest during the evening. -13 °C to -8 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Tuesday 15. January 2019

15 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Fresh breeze from southwest, changing to moderate gale from the west during the afternoon. -11 °C to -2 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Sterk vind frå SV-V og stadvis mykje nedbør vil gje stor snøtransport inn i N-Ø-S leoområder. Her vil ein få pålagring og ferske fokksnøflak over 600 moh. Det vil òg vere større fokksnøflak frå uværet måndag i SV-S-Ø-NØ fjellsider som no får auka pålagring.
