Avalanche warning for region Hallingdal Tuesday 18.02.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Naturally released loose avalanches can occur.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 17. February 2020

Snøoverflaten består av fokksnø med ulik hardhet og utbredelse etter perioder med vind og snø. Fokksnøflakene finner man hovedsaklig i nordøstvendte heng.

Mountain weather

Monday 17. February 2020

6 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Gale from southwest, changing to moderate gale from the southwest during the evening. -7 °C to -1 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Tuesday 18. February 2020

4 mm precipitation, up to 10 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to fresh breeze from the southwest during the afternoon. -8 °C to -4 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Vind og en del nedbør vil gi ferske fokksnøflak, hovedsaklig i nordøstvendte heng. Stedvis kan disse løses ut naturlig. Gunstig temperatur vil gjøre at flakene raskt stabiliserer seg. Skredfaren vil være avtagende utover dagen.
