Avalanche warning for region Voss Friday 21.02.2020

Danger level 4 - High avalanche danger

An increase in wind and snow will lead to a large amount of wind transported snow. Avoid all avalanche terrain. Naturally triggered avalanches likely.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can very easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a large truck or destroy several houses (size 4).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Water pooling in/above snow layers

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snøoverflata er preget av mye vind og nedbør tidligere i uka. Dette har gitt både tydelige fokksnøflak, skavler og avblåste rygger. Snø tilgjengelig for vindtransport i høyden. Det gamle snødekket er smelteomvandlet etter mildvær og gjenfrysing.

Tørt str. 4 skred trolig utløst natt til onsdag i nærheten av Voss. Ellers observert noen våte str.1 snøskred ved Nesheimfjellet og noen store tørre str.2 skred ved Voss.

Rv13 ved Vikafjellet stengt på grunn av fare for snøskred onsdag og torsdag.

10 mm precipitation, up to 35 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from south, changing to strong breeze from the west during the evening. -5 °C to 0 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Friday 21. February 2020

30 mm precipitation, up to 50 mm in the most exposed areas. Gale from southwest. -4 °C to 0 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Kraftig vind og mye nedbør fredag, i tillegg til mye snø i terrenget tilgjengelig for vindtransport, vil gi økende skredfare. Det er fare for svært store naturlig utløste skred. Skredproblemet vil gjelde i ny og gammel fokksnø med stor pålagring.
Under mildværsgrensa vil det kunne gå store våte naturlig utløste snøskred.
