Avalanche warning for region Tromsø Friday 18.01.2019

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Some smaller storm slabs might have formed on Wednesday and could be easy to trigger. The recently formed wind slabs has gained strength and are proving hard to trigger. The old persistent weak layer near the ground is locked by strong overlaying snow.

Avalanche problems

New snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 17. January 2019

Mountain weather

Thursday 17. January 2019

Little to no precipitation. Calm/light breeze from southeast. -16 °C to -7 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Friday 18. January 2019

4-6 mm precipitation. Breeze from south, changing to fresh breeze from the northwest during the evening. -15 °C to -8 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
