Avalanche warning for region Tromsø Wednesday 09.01.2019

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger here.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Tuesday 8. January 2019

Mountain weather

Tuesday 8. January 2019

8 mm precipitation, up to 18 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from west, changing to strong breeze from the north during renoon. -5 °C to -1 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Wednesday 9. January 2019

3-7 mm precipitation. Breeze from north, changing to fresh breeze from the southwest during the afternoon. -7 °C to -1 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
