Avalanche warning for region Trollheimen Tuesday 18.01.2022

Danger level 4 - High avalanche danger

Published:
Very large avalanches are expected due to rising temperatures and rain on a snowpack characterized by high amount of fresh snow and unstable storm slabs. Avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche problems

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a large truck or destroy several houses (size 4).

Water pooling in/above snow layers

New snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 17. January 2022

Mountain weather

Monday 17. January 2022

20 mm precipitation, up to 30 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 300 m a.s.l during the evening. Strong gale from northwest, changing to moderate gale from the northwest during renoon. -10 °C to -4 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Tuesday 18. January 2022

5 mm precipitation, up to 10 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 1400 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Moderate gale from west, changing to gale from the southwest during the afternoon. -4 °C to 0 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Mildvær og regn svekker stabiliteten i snødekket, og gir fare for naturlig utløste våte flakskred og løssnøskred under mildværsgrensa. I noen heng kan skred bli svært store (str 4).

Nysnø og vind fører til flakdannelse i nordøstvendte vendte leheng over nysnøgrensa. I noen heng kan skred bli store (str 3). Stigende nysnøgrense utover dagen.
