Avalanche forecast for Trollheimen Monday 2019-03-18

2
Moderate
Published:

Locally unstable avalanche conditions above treeline. Be careful of recently loaded wind slabs. A persistent weak layer of facets may be triggered, especially where the snow cover is thin.

New snow (slab avalanches)

Buried weak layer of new snow

Be careful in steep slopes and around terrain traps until the new snow has stabilized. The avalanche problem is generally widely distributed on any steep slope with deep new snow. Look for cohesive new snow that breaks apart or is poorly bonded to the old snow. Cracks around your skis are a typical dangersign.
2 - Medium
Low additional load
Specific steep slopes
Possible

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

Buried weak layer of faceted snow near surface

Keep distance to each other when traveling in avelanche terrain. NB, remote triggering is possible. Make very conservative route choices, especially in unknown terrain, after snowfall and if temperatures rise. Identifying areas where the weak layer is present might be difficult and requires experience. Danger signs are whoumpf-sounds and cracking which means that you influence weak layers and should avoid avalanche terrain. However, absence of signs does not mean it is safe.
2 - Medium
High additional load
Specific steep slopes
Possible

Avalanche Danger Assessment

Rask stabilisering i gunstig temperatyr, men store mngder treng tid Forecast too low Har nok komme meir snø her enn meldt, så faregrad er for lågt. Fraegrad vil raskt gå ned, truleg ila kvelden dersom det løyer

Avalanche Activity

18. Mar. During the day (+01:00) No avalanche activity Lite sikt

Snow Cover

70 cm in total Heavy snow drift 25 cm new snow Storm slab (soft slab) Dry Alt over skog er vindpåvirka. Fortsatt mjukt, men vil ganske raskt bli hardare med gunstige temperatur

Weather

Snow -3 °C 12 m/s from NW ↘ 80% clouds Føyker bra over skoggrensa

Danger Sign

Recent snowdrift Ca 30 cm nysnø i skjerma områder i skog. Dette ligg som store fokksnødyner i le

Whumpf sound Drønn i fersk fokksnø

Avalanche Problems

Dry slab avalanche Buried weak layer of faceted snow above a crust A big and identifiable crystal in the weak layer. Difficult to trigger 3 - Large N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW above 800 masl Sjå profil. Drønn i dette laget, men det er tjukt og overliggande blyanthard fokksnø held godt att. Vanskelig å si, men den store pålagringa kan løyse ut dette og da kan flaka få stort omfang

Dry slab avalanche Buried weak layer of new snow Within half a meter The overlying slab is soft. Easy to trigger 2 - Medium NE, E, SE, S, SW above 800 masl Over og i skoggrense
