Avalanche warning for region Sør-Troms Sunday 21.04.2019

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
A very complex situation is at hand. Rain will weaken the snowpack below treeline. In the alpine new snow and strong winds will form unstable wind slabs. The old persistent weak layer may still be triggered after being weakened by the last days raining event.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Loose snow

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of faceted snow above a crust

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Saturday 20. April 2019

Laget er trolig mest utbredt over min. 600 moh.

Mountain weather

Saturday 20. April 2019

3 mm precipitation, up to 10 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from southwest. 1 °C to 6 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Sunday 21. April 2019

8 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from southwest. -1 °C to 3 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
