Avalanche warning for region Sunnmøre Thursday 20.01.2022

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Generally unstable conditions. Avoid lee areas with wind deposited snow, especially in the alpine. Naturally released avalanches can occur.

Avalanche problems

New snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Wednesday 19. January 2022

Mountain weather

Wednesday 19. January 2022

30 mm precipitation, up to 40 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 1000 m a.s.l Wednesday night. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to gale from the northwest during the afternoon. -13 °C to 0 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Thursday 20. January 2022

15 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Gale from northwest, changing to strong breeze from the northwest during the afternoon. -13 °C to -7 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
