Avalanche warning for region Sunnmøre Monday 09.12.2019

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
There is a persistent weak layer buried in the snow cover that may be triggered by a skier. Remote triggering possible on hotspots or on convex terrain where the snow cover is thin. Wind slabs in the alpine may also form avalanches.

Avalanche problems

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3). Remote triggering is possible.

Buried weak layer of faceted snow near the ground

New snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Sunday 8. December 2019

Mountain weather

Sunday 8. December 2019

6 mm precipitation, up to 12 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from southeast, changing to fresh breeze from the south during the afternoon. -10 °C to -2 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Monday 9. December 2019

10 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Fresh breeze from north, changing to strong breeze from the north during the afternoon. -11 °C to -3 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment
